well, that's what I get for commenting before finishing the video. Looks like you address my point, much more succinctly. Kudos

Here's something I like about the end of episode 12, and something that in my mind starts off Vash's changing as a person. When he gets pissed off at Monev, he's fully ready to kill him, he flat out says "Now it's your turn to die." He doesn't really stop himself though. After his flashback to Rem, he asks "It would be wrong to kill him, wouldn't it Rem?" I don't think it was just asking for reassurance, I think it's possible that he doesn't know. Spoilers here (don't think I'm actually spoiling it for anyone at this site though :) ), but Vash had a GIGANORMOUS traumatic event, early in childhood, that in my opinion locked him into his psychological state. At the point of developement that he was at (or appeared to be at... whatever that translates to in Plante years) children don't have an extremely well developed sense of morality on their own. They want to know what is right, and what is wrong, and generally accept what they're told by their parents, or teachers, or other authority figures, but they don't bother asking WHY it's right or wrong, or what kind of extenuating circumstances there are, etc. It's not til later that they start to rebel, to try and figure out the more complex aspects of morality, such as the reasons why things are right or wrong, and when right and wrong might be swapped. Unfortunately for Vash, before he got to that point, his parental figures (not just Rem, but everyone he knew and considered to be family) died horribly. Rem, already worshiped a little as mother figure, now became even more deified by both dying, and becoming a savior right in front of him. Once he crashed on that planet, there was no way he was going to ever defy her teachings, and that's what drove his actions for those first 133 years. But while he'll live by them, he doesn't necessarily always understand them, and he certainly hasn't internalized them. This isn't the first time he wanted to kill someone, but held off, not because he thought it was wrong to kill, but because he thought Rem wouldn't want him to. He nearly killed Knives their first night out, but for Rem's last words. In a way, Knives might even be helping Vash by what he does in sending the Guns after him, and finally having Legato finish his mission, because after all the trauma of that, Vash is finally more of a real adult person, able to see what's been done, able to make his own choices, based on his own morality, rather than following Rem's morality by rote.

"anything you can't protect, someone else takes, and if you want something bad enough, you have to kill to get it" Sounds like they're living Ayn Rand's dream, not by choice though. Wolfwood's final thoughts in his little introspective in episode 23 is "Sometimes I think this planet is the worst place ever".
