So, I read Battle Royale back in May and have since been obsessed with the franchise. I read the Manga, watched the film, and talked up the debate of BR vs Hunger Games.

I want to know how you all feel about the book/movie/manga and what sort of lasting impressions it left upon you.

I myself had SEVERAL dreams of being on the Program.

Signature Relevant.

I read the manga, and watched the movie not too long ago. Coming from the Hunger Games first to BR, I was not as ready for the amount of gore in the manga. But after a while I lvoed it and I couldnt stop reading it. I really liked how alot of the kids were basically expendable and died really, really fast. I know that makes me sound really sadistic and *dolphin noise*, but meh^^

Well, no. You're not sadistic and *dolphin noise*.

The thing about BR is that it was objective most of the time. The characters were not guaranteed survival based on their popularity or importance.

I too read Hunger Games first and was immediately (but positively) taken aback by the grotesque differences in the two novels.

What makes BR special is that in Hunger Games,
Spoiler: show
A character like Peeta should have completely been killed after his mortal wound. The whole book is like a contrived fairy tale for children where the characters that the author loves survive the most because it makes for a better plot.

In Royale,
Spoiler: show
Shuya has the same sort of injury but is found immediately. Characters without such a fate like Shinji were killed despite the reader's high hopes for them.

The events of BR transpire almost randomly, while Games is more contrived.

Mitsuko and Kiriyama represent these major villains to the reader, yet
Spoiler: show
the author has Kazuo kill Mitsuko almost instantly upon meeting her in the novel, thus rendering her dead and out of the story despite the potential she had as a final "boss" to Kawada's team. Kazuo more than made up for it.

Games on the other hand presents the reader with these set rules. The games are conducted one way. Yet suddenly,
Spoiler: show
the rules change to suit the story better. Now two people can survive. Now there are muttations in play. Now the credibility of this author is in question.

I read the manga and watched the movie but never read the book. I enjoyed the movie and thought the first half of the manga was really good but the second half of the manga really pissed me off because there was way too much filler, it felt like the last few volumes could have 10x shorter. I mean did really need to have a

And then a few years later I started to read the Hunger Games and at first I thought it was just a Battle Royale rip off like everyone else but when I actually read it I realized it wasn't. While it does have similar themes and premise the story was different enough to not be a rip off. And while I understand that why some people could see some the plot stuff as contrived like Gale turning from a best friend to an asshole rather quickly, the things like Peeta and Katniss both surviving never bugged me because the contestants were set up to be celebrities ever since they entered capital city so if nobody had won the people living in Capitol city would have been disappointed. It would have been like if we had watched an entire football season just to find out nobody was going to win the super bowl. The games were designed to be entertainment for them.

The contrived bit was that Collins rewrote the rules of the games (Under the name of Seneca Crane) to make it better suit her story.

I can go on about differences from near and far between the two. I think that BR is focused on the characters and their human experience. Games on the other hand is more focused, as it turns out, out the world of her story, something that Takami didn't put too much thought into when writing his book.

Ah, Battle Royale~ I read the manga and am considering doing it for my literature assignment where we have to review a book. I heavily enjoyed it, I thought it was immensely superior to The Hunger Games, thats all I can really say at this point.

In terms of fairness, you must compare the novelization to the Hunger Games, not the Manga.

So there have been rumors recently that there might be an American Battle Royale. While this not new, they have been trying to make a Hollywood movie of BR for some years but now there is a slim possibility it can end up as a TV show. I don't think it will happen because they would have to censor the violence way too much but it could work on Starz or HBO if they made it a mini series. And if a movie every is made and released it would have to be rated R, unlike The Hunger Games which needed a doodoo ton of shacky cam to keep its PG-13 rating.
