Couldn't find one so I made one :/
Bassically a thread about books you are interested in and/or have read.

I'm looking into reading Mardock Scramble, anyone know if the book is good or not?

I am almost done reading The Odyssey, there are two factors keeping me from finishing it. One is how slow paced the last third of the book is and the other is the amount of homework, family issues and work I have. Maybe during winter break I will finish it, maybe.

I've been chewing through most of Brandon Sanderson's back catalogue of work over the past month or so. While he writes fairly well, and I give him props for a lot of creativity in his ideas and his willingness to spin genre conventions on their heads, I still wouldn't call him one of my favourite fantasy authors. At the very least though, his books are still pretty good reads.

Been readin' John Ketwig's autobiographical account of his time in Vietnam, ..."And a Hard Rain Fell". It's decent, focusing more on the little details from the time than being on the front lines (he wasn't on the front lines, so nothing terribly gritty if that's your thing). It gets a wee bit preachy at times with the antiwar sentiments (I know you're against the war, I understand where you're coming from, but yeesh), and there's probably more interesting accounts of the war, but hey, I could've been stuck with a worse reading assignment for class.

Wish I had more time to finish Walden and move on to the other books I have yet to read on my shelf, thank god for Thanksgiving break.

Books? Awesome, I'm usually reading at least one book at any given time, so...

I'll use a form from another forum. I just finished this one.
Spoiler: show
1. Author + Title: Nine Stories by J.D. Sailnger
2. Why You Wanted To Read The Book: I have a weird probably unhealthy obsession with Salinger's work. He's a bit strange as an author, but he has such a strong sense of voice and his stories feel so true-to-life but subtly different in a way. I dunno, basically I just like Salinger.
3. First Sentence: "There were ninety-seven New York advertising men in the hotel, and, the way they were monopolizing the long-distance lines, the girl in 507 had to wait from noon till almost two-thirty to get her call through."
4. Page You Are On: Completed, 198
5. What You Think Of It: It's probably best to go over each of the Nine Stories individually, so just a brief summary of what I thought of all of them.

A Perfect Day For Bananafish - Depressed the hell out of me, it really did. It has this weird juxtaposition of hilarious bananafish and the ending which I won't spoil. Really jerky, but I think intentionally.

Uncle Wiggily In Conneticut - Also depressed the hell out of me. It kinda reminded me of The Lady With The Dog by Anton Chekhov, except it focused more on the emptiness of American materialism than the emptiness of the Russian nobility. Still a very nice story.

Just Before The War With The Eskimos - No strong feelings, though it does demonstrate Salinger's propensity for making "literary home movies," as he called them.

The Laughing Man - Very clever and subtle storytelling, also pretty funny at parts, though ultimately pretty depressing like a majority of Salinger's stuff. I liked it.

Down At The Dinghy - Absolutely adorable and sweet.

For Esme - with Love and Squalor - Probably my favorite of the stories, Salinger's incredible talent for storytelling and narrative are evident here and overall it's pretty heartwrenching.

Pretty Mouth And Green My Eyes - No strong feelings.

De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period - Was utterly hilarious, and not in a boring, academic way like "Oh! How ironic," but in a genuine, gut-laugh sort of way.

Teddy - Interesting philosophically, but ultimately a bit too heavy-handed for my tastes.

Recently finished The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravits and Spice and Wolf Vol. V.

I really liked Duddy Kravitz and can easily see why it's considered a classic. However, I do not think Mordecai Richler used certain characters as well as he could have; Particularly the Boy Wonder, who should have gotten more screen-time and been fleshed out more. Spice and Wolf Vol. 5 on the other hand was excellent, I just wish it was longer.

I am currently reading Hello, I Must Be Going: Groucho and His Friends, it's a biography on Groucho Marx. I find it hilarious and incredibly fascinating.

I am almost reading The Traquility Wars by Gentry Lee. Idunno. I find it pretty boring so far (at 200 of around 600). Giant politics in space, but it still feels kind of small like not much has happened yet. Maybe it would have been good to read his other books first, but i didn't wanna.

Still, i don't want to just drop it. That's not my style. I'll start reading it again when i have time, which should be any year now.

I'm currently half-way through reading the last in the Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi series, Apocalypse. So far its alright, but they definately leaving pretty much everyone's heads on the chopping block at the moment. It'll be interesting to see how it ends.

Before that I finished reading the Warhammer 40,000 book Victories of the Space Marines which is a collection of short stories about different groupos of Space Marines. I do have one major problem with the book, in that one of the stories is not a victory for the Space Marines involved. Other than that is was fine, it had a few details about the 40k universe that I didn't know and I really liked that they had a tie-in story with Path of the Outcast.
