Africans count as Aliens by definition of the word.

Unless you meant Extra terrestrials.

Any anime/manga with protagonist sucked into another world or traveling to another time? Tried Kyo Kara Maoh and 12 Kingdoms, wasn't really ever hooked.

Vision of Escaflowne, Fushigi Yugi (It has some good moments and some that just require patience: after the twentieth name calling "tesuo!"-style it starts to bother you XD and it is rather old), perhaps Tsubasa reservoir chronicles (thats more of a guess I dropped it after the fifth episode cause it was already dragging and rather uninteresting imho but it totally fits what you are looking for)

If you want some deliciously bad, try Garzey's Wing. It has the most hilarious out of context lines and is only 3 episodes long.

Amatsuki Was definitely interesting and had a nice atmosphere to it.

Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari somewhat connected to the tenchi universe

Edit: and in response to Himura For anime with romance

Bakemonogatari (don't watch Nisemonogatari until after Kizumonogatari and Nekomonogatari come out in 2013)
